WMS vs WFS: Choosing the Right Web Service
Understand the fundamental differences between Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS). Learn which OGC standard to use for display versus analysis.
When building or consuming web mapping applications, you will inevitably encounter two acronyms: WMS and WFS. Both are Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards, but they serve completely different purposes.
Web Map Service (WMS)
WMS is designed for visualization. When a client requests a WMS layer, the server renders the data (applying colors, labels, and symbols) and returns a static image (like a PNG or JPEG).
- Returns: Rendered map images
- Use case: Background layers, visual context
- Pros: Very fast rendering, complex cartography handled by the server
- Cons: You cannot download or analyze the underlying data
Web Feature Service (WFS)
WFS is designed for data retrieval. When a client requests a WFS layer, the server returns the raw vector features (geometry and attributes) in formats like GML or GeoJSON.
- Returns: Raw vector data (geometry and attributes)
- Use case: Spatial analysis, data editing, downloading datasets
- Pros: Full access to the data, styling can be changed on the client side
- Cons: Slower than WMS, can consume significant bandwidth
The Core Difference
| Feature | WMS | WFS |
|---|---|---|
| Output Format | Image (PNG, JPEG) | Vector Data (GML, GeoJSON) |
| Styling | Defined by the server | Defined by the client |
| Data Access | No (attributes may be partially accessible via GetFeatureInfo) | Yes, full access |
| Primary Purpose | Display | Analysis and Extraction |
When to Use Which?
Use WMS when you need to display complex spatial data quickly without overloading the client, such as showing a basemap or a highly detailed topographic layer.
Use WFS when you need to download the data for offline analysis, import it into a desktop GIS, or process it programmatically.
Downloading WFS Data
While many tools can display WMS, downloading WFS data requires specific software or browser-based tools. Our free GIS Converter and Downloader supports extracting data from web services and converting them into usable formats.
Summary
Understanding the difference between WMS and WFS is crucial for efficient GIS development. Always choose the service that matches your goal — visual display or data analysis.
