How to Filter ArcGIS Data Before Downloading

Learn how to filter large ArcGIS datasets before downloading them. Save time and bandwidth by extracting only the features you need.

Downloading a 2GB dataset just to get 50 specific records is a waste of time and bandwidth. ArcGIS REST services allow you to filter the data on the server side, so you only download what you need.

Attribute Filtering (The `where` clause)

The most common way to filter data is by attribute. For example, if you are only interested in commercial properties, you can filter the dataset to return only features where `ZONING = 'Commercial'`.

https://services.arcgis.com/.../FeatureServer/0/query?where=ZONING%3D%27Commercial%27&outFields=*&f=geojson

This tells the server to only send back the features that match the criteria.

Spatial Filtering (Geometry)

If you only need data for a specific area, you can pass a bounding box or a polygon to the query.

&geometry=-95.99,36.15,-95.98,36.16&geometryType=esriGeometryEnvelope&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects

This returns only the features that intersect that specific bounding box in Texas.

Combining Filters

You can combine attribute and spatial filters to extract highly specific datasets.

&where=POPULATION > 50000&geometry=...&spatialRel=...

The Drawback of Manual Filtering

While URL parameters are powerful, constructing them manually can be tricky. If you are using a browser-based tool like Geo Server Data Downloader, you can filter the data visually by zooming to an extent or clicking a feature on the map, and the tool will apply the spatial filter automatically.

Summary

Filtering data before downloading is a best practice for efficient GIS workflows. By using attribute and spatial filters, you avoid downloading unnecessary features and reduce processing time in your desktop software.
